Why is there a song stuck in my head?

earworm stuck songMost people enjoy listening to music and can name off several favorites when asked. But have you ever experienced an earworm? An earworm is when part of a song, usually catchy, gets stuck in a person’s mind and replays over and over.  You may also hear it referred to as a brainworm or stuck song syndrome. But why does it happen? Why is there a song stuck in my head?

Never-ending loop

When we listen to music the auditory cortex portion of the brain is actively involved. The more we listen to a song, the more familiar it becomes to the brain. The auditory cortex becomes good at filling in the rhythm of the song. This means that even when the song is no longer playing, your brain sometimes keeps singing along. why is there a song stuck in my head? You are forced to pay attention to the song and find yourself repeating it over and over. But the more you repeat the song the longer you perpetuate the cycle of involuntary musical imagery (INMI).

Bored Brain

Some researchers believe that having a song stuck in your head could also be a sign of an idling brain. The brain is trying to keep busy and so it latches on to a pattern of repetition. The songs most likely to get stuck have upbeat simple melodies with easy to remember repetitive lyrics. They also tend to be current trending songs or even advertisement jingles. To put it simply, the easier a song is to sing and the more memorable it is, the more likely it is to get stuck in your head.

It is estimated that 98% of people will have experienced an earworm at least once in their life. Interestingly, research shows that both men and women experience earworms at about the same rate although they usually last longer in women. Moreover, most earworms come from songs with lyrics – over 70%. Instrumental music tends not to cause earworms at anywhere near the same rate.

The British Journal of Psychology published a report in 2010 stating earworms usually occur in repeating loops of 15 to 30 seconds. They are also more likely to occur in people who listen to music more regularly or work with music. People who are tired and stressed will also have a higher occurrence rate. In fact, individuals with obsessive-compulsive tendencies report having earworms more often than those who don’t.

How to stop it

Research shows that engaging the brain in a different activity could help stop an earworm. The key is to engage working memory in mildly difficult activities. You can try doing puzzles, anagrams, math problems or even read a novel. Another option, for immediate relief, could be chewing gum.  song stuck in head remedy

The act of chewing gum can potentially stop an earworm by blocking the auditory cortex from repeating itself. The auditory cortex is stopped from producing and projecting auditory, especially musical, images. You could also try listening to the song in its entirety or playing a different song altogether. But some people report this can actually make it worse. So our advice is to try the gum.

Why is the ocean blue?

Water normally does not have a color. When we drink a glass of water, take a shower or bath or get caught in the rain, we don’t expect to be drenched in blue. And yet we are also used to the oceans and seas coming in a wide range of blues. Why is there such a difference? Exactly why is the ocean blue?why is the ocean blue

A lot of people might think that the oceans and seas are blue because they are reflecting the blue of the sky. This is not entirely accurate. It is actually sunlight, and the way it is dispersed, that causes the ocean to appear blue to our eyes.

light wavelengths

Light is made up of different colors with varying wavelengths. Red and orange light have longer wavelengths. When red light hits the water it is absorbed more strongly. Blue and violet lights, on the other hand, have shorter wavelengths. Blue is less absorbed by the water and therefore becomes more visible to our eyes as it is filtered out. This causes us to see the oceans and seas as mainly blue.

varying shades

The ocean and seas can take on a variety of shades of blue because of the way light hits and then bounces off other objects in the water, including sediment. For example, greener hues will result if more algae is present. If there has been a big storm, the oceans and seas can look a lot darker in color, even brown. stormy oceanThis is because sand and other sediment, including runoff from river, is stirred up and is closer to the surface.

Greater expanses of water can absorb more light. However, after 656 feet very little light gets through. Once a depth of 3,280 feet is reached no light penetrates. Deep water looks a lot darker because the more water light has to pass through the more it gets absorbed. Water closer to shore is usually lighter in color, even turquoise, because of the way light bounces off the floor of the ocean and other objects.

Why is there a leap year?

The next leap year is on February 29, 2020. why is there a leap year?Almost every 4 years we experience a leap year where one extra day is added to February, the shortest month of the year. So instead of 28 days in February, we get 29. But why is there a leap year?

Leap years are actually key in ensuring our calendar works properly.

making up for lost time

Most of the world now uses the Gregorian calendar, a solar calendar, which is based on the revolutions of the Earth around the sun. We know how long a year is from tracking the sun’s position and the seasons. The calendar has 365 days. But it actually takes the Earth about 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 45 second to revolve around the sun once. Without adding an extra day to February almost every 4 years, about 6 hours would be lost every year. That means it would only take 100 years for the calendar to become inaccurate by about 24 days.

Keep in mind that a leap year is not every 4 years. For every 400 years, 3 leap years need to be skipped. This is to make up for slight time discrepancies. So for example, 1700, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years. As you can see, these years are not evenly divisible by 400. In fact, any century year that is not evenly divisible by 400 can be a leap year.

The Gregorian calendar

Leap years first came into use more than 2000 years ago. The Roman general Julius Caesar adopted leap years into the Julian calendar which began in 45 BC. But at that time the only requirement for a year to become a leap year was for it to be divisible by four. This meant too many leap years occurred. This is a problem because of the effect on the seasons as the time adds up. By the 16th century, the vernal equinox had moved up from March 21 to March 11.

The Julian calendar was adjusted in 1528 by Pope Gregory XIII to rectify the time discrepancies.Gregorian Calendar Leap Year According to the Gregorian calendar, a leap year is identified as being evenly divided by 4 and also evenly divided by both 100 and 400. If a year can be evenly divided by 100 but not also evenly by 400, it is not a leap year.

why february?

You might be wondering how February became the default month for a leap year. The reason goes back to Julius Caesar. In the Julian Calendar, February had 30 days, July had 31 days and August only had 29. When Augustus became the new roman emperor he wanted August to have 31 days. To do this he added two extra days to August. One of those days came from February leaving it with 28 and not 29 days.

Why is Neptune blue?

Neptune is the eighth planet in our Solar System. It is now technically the last planet in our Solar System and the furthest from the sun. Pluto is no longer classed as a planet. Neptune was named for the Roman god of the sea and has a striking deep-blue color. But why is Neptune blue? Why is Neptune blue?

Neptune was only officially discovered in 1846 by mathematical prediction. This is because it is not visible without high-powered telescopes. In 1989 NASA’s Voyager 2 recorded real detailed observations of the planet, including its color. Neptune, along with Uranus, Jupiter and Saturn, is a gas giant planet. It is the densest giant planet.

Neptune is the third biggest planet in our Solar System. It has the fourth largest diameter and is roughly 17 times the mass of the Earth. It is also one of the coldest planets due to its distance from the sun.

chemical makeup

The reason for Neptune’s blue color is due to its atmosphere’s chemical makeup. Neptune’s atmosphere is mainly comprised of liquid ammonia, hydrogen, helium and methane. Methane is concentrated in the upper portion of Neptune’s atmosphere. The heavy methane clouds absorb the light from the sun. The red light wavelengths are absorbed more easily. The blue light wavelengths, which are shorter, are reflected back into space. Therefore we see the blue light and not the red, making Neptune appear a deep blue to us.

If you were to get closer to Neptune you would notice variations in its color. This is because of the way the clouds are formed above the surface. Neptune experiences a lot of storms with winds often surpassing 2.400 km/hour. Indeed, Neptune’s storms are the fastest in the Solar System. This contributes to the shifts in cloud cover.

Neptune vs. uranus

Uranus is also blue in color although more of a blue-green than Neptune’s deep blue. neptune blueThe fact that Uranus and Neptune differ in their shades of blue means that the chromophores found in their respective atmospheres are slightly different. Chromophores are chemicals that influence color. Scientists, however, have not yet determined which additional chromophore is influencing the color of Neptune’s atmosphere.

Why is gold valuable?

Gold has long been a highly desire and valued commodity. In fact it has been valued for more than 3000 years. Indeed, tradition has firmly linked it to the financial world as a currency and standard for currency. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons for why is gold valuable?

Gold, relatively rare, is somewhat difficult to find. It is also a time-consuming and expensive process to extract it in large amounts. This remains true today and that’s with the use of advanced machines. In the pre-industrial era people had to work with far more primitive means of extraction. The supply of gold is therefore entirely dependent on what is mined.

why is gold valuable?

Gold is also valued for its looks. It is the only metal with such a unique color. It has long been used for decorative ornaments. For example gold jewelry is desirable all over the world. The fact that it resists corrosion well also contributes to its value.

Gold is held by a lot of banks and investors. At the moment, one ounce of gold sells for more than $1000. It has long been a major part of the monetary systems of the world. This is true throughout thousands years of history. And yet gold does not produce earnings or dividends. Let’s look at the key reasons for why is gold valuable.

physical properties

As societies grew and developed, it became necessary to have a standardized form of currency for trade. The more traditional method of bartering goods for services and vice versa was no longer as useful. Over a long period of time gold became the most valued form of currency.

Gold’s physical properties have made it more valued over silver and copper in terms of worth. Although both silver and copper have their value. Silver is very useful for industrial uses. Copper exists in great quantities and has well-known electrical conductivity.

Gold, however, is highly durable. It cannot be destroyed by water because of its anticorrosion properties. Time also has little effect on it. We can see this from antique coins for example. It also only melts at a minimum temperature of 1945.4° F.

Another key physical property of gold is its malleability. Gold can be easily spread without cracking. It is also highly ductile which makes it easier to stretch without breaking. It’s color and shine also add to its appeal. It is arguably the most physically attractive of the 118 elements of the periodic table.gold valuable

For these reasons gold works well as money. Interestingly though the amount of gold found to date would only equate to 2 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Tradition

Gold has had high purchasing power throughout history. In the time of Christ, one ounce of gold was enough for a Roman citizen to clothe himself in rich finery. Historians have established that in 400 BC, one ounce of gold could buy 350 loaves of bread.

Since 1933, when gold was taken off the gold standard, the value of gold has been on an upward trend. The fact that gold is now freely traded on the stock market has increased its worth and purchasing power.

But perhaps the most important role of gold is its ability to retain its value over time. Gold is ultimately a form of insurance against crisis and inflation.

long-term value

Gold is not required to be backed by banks, governments or brokerage firms. This is not the case when it comes to paper money which can drastically lose its value. This is also true for other paper assets, including stocks and bonds. Direct ownership of gold, however, means a guarantee for its worth. Keep in mind, however, that it’s worth can fluctuate.

form of currency

Gold, if you have it, is easily converted to cash. And its value is consistent. Banks and other financial institutions are unable to inflate the prices for gold. Moreover, it cannot be accurately counterfeited. These are all key financial traits that make gold valuable.

Gold is also easy to move around – it doesn’t take a lot of it to reach high value. If you split gold up, it’s value remains the same. This is not the same for diamonds which will generally decrease in value when split up.

long term investment

People have different opinions about keeping gold as an asset. A lot of financial industry workers would probably suggest investing in stocks. Other people point to history which shows gold has always retained its value. Fluctuations in the worth of gold, however, have happened. For example, in 2001 one ounce of gold was worth $260. It then peaked in September 2011 at almost $2000 for one ounce.

Why is protein good for you?

Protein is an essential part of body composition. Every cell in the human body utilizes protein in some way or another. For example, hair and nails are composed mostly of protein. Protein is also used to build and repair muscle tissue. Let’s look more in detail at the answers to the question why is protein good for you.

why is protein good for you?

Protein is a macronutrient. This means that it is important for the body to have fairly large quantities to work with. The same is true for fat and carbohydrates. Vitamins and minerals, on the other hand, are micronutrients. Micronutrients are needed in smaller amounts.

Protein is not stored by the body. This means that getting enough protein from our diets for the body to function properly is very important. Keep in mind, however, that you probably need less of it than you think you do.

Many people believe protein is responsible for building up muscles. This is not entirely true. Exercise and weight lifting exercises develop muscles. Protein, however, is a good source of energy to fuel the working of muscles.

How much protein?

The U.S. Department of Health recommends that male teenagers and adults consume a total of 7 ounces of protein per day. Young children, women and most older people are fine with 5 to 6 ounces of protein per day.

Many people point to the benefits of a high protein and low carbohydrate diet. This kind of diet can aid in weight loss. This is because a high protein, low-carb diet puts the metabolism in a state of ketosis. Normally, the body will use carbohydrates as its primary source of fuel. But when you cut down on carbs and eat more protein the body starts to burn its own fat. As the fat is broken down, ketones, small pieces of carbon, are released into the bloodstream. This can suppress appetite. It also increases the need to urinate, as the body is flushing out excess waste and fluids. This leads to less bloating and an overall reduction in water weight.

You should be careful, however, of very strict eating regimes. High protein low-carb diets may have short-term benefits, like faster weight loss but they can contribute to more long-term health problems. For example, you’ve probably heard of the Atkins diet. A lot of people lost weight on the high protein, low-carb diet where lean meat is the staple food. This is in part because of higher satiety levels. The more protein you eat, the less hungry you tend to feel. However, consuming meat every day can lead to major health issues, including cardiovascular disease. This is because animal products are high in saturated fat.

Not consuming enough fruits and vegetables when on a high protein low-carb diet is also not healthy. It’s important to eat plant products since this is where most of our vitamins and minerals come from.

healthy sources of protein

Eating a lot of processed meats like deli meats, hot dogs and sausages is not the best way to meet your protein needs. Healthier sources of animal protein include fish and chicken without the skin. You can also get great protein from plant foods.beans good protein Beans have the highest amount of protein found in plant foods. Black beans are especially good for you. They are also an excellent source of fiber. Nuts are another great option, though smaller quantities should be eaten because they can be high in fat. Whole grains also provide protein along with quinoa, which we eat like a grain.

not enough protein

If you are not getting enough protein in your diet you will become deficient in amino acids. The body uses protein every day to aid in growth and maintenance. It’s important for our skin and hair, the digestive system, hormonal balances and building immune system antibodies. Without adequate protein from your diet, you can experience lack of energy, fatigue, a sluggish immune system, low muscle mass, unstable blood sugar, moodiness, problems with memory and concentration and difficulties in losing or maintaining weight.

Why is my girlfriend ignoring me?

Relationships, platonic and romantic, can involve a lot of ups and downs. It can be confusing, especially in the beginning stages of a relationship, to figure out what exactly the other person is thinking or feeling. It’s usually best to be straight-forward and ask. Not everyone, however, is comfortable with asking directly. So let’s take a look at some of the reasons for why is my girlfriend ignoring me?

have you had an argument recently?

Arguing happens. It’s important to try and resolve any conflict as calmly as possible. why is my girlfriend ignoring me?This isn’t always easy. Sometimes you need space and time to process feelings and come up with a solution. That’s OK. But keep in mind that not everyone handles arguments in the same way. If the argument has not been resolved satisfactorily in her eyes, this could be a reason for her ignoring you.

You might need to give her some more time or allow her to vent her feelings on the subject.

Did you forget an important date/event/memory?

No one likes feeling they have been placed on the back burner. If your girlfriend feels let down or unappreciated, this could be a reason for her to ignore you. You should try to determine if you did forget something important. Depending on the situation, trying to make it up to her could be the right way to resolve any hurt feelings.

does she have a lot going on?

It is completely possible that your girlfriend is ignoring you because she is very busy and stressed out with work, school, family commitments, or a big project. Have you ever become so involved in something that you forget to check your phone? Or let emails and messages pile up? We’ve all been there. Sometimes a gentle reminder letting your loved one know you are there for them and happy to help out where possible, is enough to resolve distance. She might need a bit of time, however, to destress.

Fading feelings?

Generally speaking, the more experience you have with romantic relationships the more you learn to recognize the signs of one that is no longer working. Maturity and experience also make it more likely that people are more straight-forward with each other and better at ending something that isn’t going anywhere. girlfriend ignoring meBut not everyone is comfortable with expressing their feelings, especially if it means potentially hurting someone else’s feelings. A lot of people, unfortunately, are just not all that brave when it comes to voicing what they really want.

If you haven’t been dating for all that long or are not in an exclusive relationship and she has steadily been ignoring you this could be a sign she wants to move on. She might, however, lack the emotional maturity to let you know clearly what she is thinking or feeling. Many relationships, especially in the beginning stages, just don’t work out. Although it can be difficult it is important to remember you always have the right to ask what is going on. You might not get an answer you like or any answer at all for that matter. But if that’s the case then the time has probably come to walk away. A healthy relationship is based on good communication, respect, understanding and mutual compromise. If you aren’t getting that from her then any more effort on your part is not worth it.

Manipulation

Unfortunately there are people out there who enjoy manipulating others. This can be a conscious act but also a subconscious one. Since there is always a power element in any kind of relationship, manipulation can happen. But it’s not something that you should have to endure. Someone who regularly ignores you even after you have expressed to them how it upsets you is being manipulative. You should seriously consider whether or not you want a person like that as a significant other.

Why is fiber important?

Doctors and nutritionists encourage people to eat a diet healthy in fiber. Dietary fiber is essential to the workings of a healthy digestive system. But why? Let’s take a look at the answers to the question why is fiber important.

Fiber is most well-known for keeping your body regular. Why is fiber important?Eating fiber helps to stop and relieve constipation. Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. The body can’t digest certain parts of plant foods. This roughage moves through the stomach, small intestine and colon helping to clear our waste.

soluble fiber vs. insoluble fiber

Fiber comes in two forms, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is easily dissolved in water. It becomes gel-like in consistency. Oats, beans, apples, peas, citrus fruits, barley and carrots are all good sources of soluble fiber. It’s important because it can aid in lowering blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water. It moves through the digestive system intact and helps to clear out waste. Individuals who suffer from constipation will often increase their intake of insoluble fiber. Good sources of insoluble fiber include nuts, beans, broccoli and cauliflower, whole-wheat flour, bran and potatoes.

A lot of plant foods have both soluble and insoluble fiber. You get the most health benefits by eating a variety of foods high in fiber.

 benefits of a high-fiber diet

A high-fiber diet can keep bowl movements regular. Dietary fiber bulks up the stool which makes it easier to evacuate. This also means constipation is less likely to occur.

Fiber can have heart-health benefits. Soluble fiber can help lower blood cholesterol levels. It can also reduce blood pressure and inflammation. The best sources of fiber for a healthier heart are beans, oat bran, oats and flaxseed.

Blood sugar levels can be kept more stabilized with a high-fiber diet. Soluble fiber slows down the body’s absorption of sugar. Eating a diet high in soluble fiber can actually cut your chances of developing type 2 diabetes. It can also reduce the chances of gall and kidney stones.

Fiber can also help maintain weight. Foods that high in fiber are dense and therefore more filling. Eating high fiber foods will make you feel fuller for longer. Moreover, foods high in fiber are less energy dense. This means that relative to their volume they have fewer calories.

 how much fiber?

Most people are not getting enough fiber in their diets. You need to regularly eat fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, in particular, to keep your body adequately supplied with fiber.

fiber important

It is generally recommended that men aged 50 or younger consume about 38 grams of fiber per day. Women, aged 50 or younger, should consume 25 grams per day. Men over the age of 50 need about 30 grams of fiber per day. While women over the age of 50 should consume about 21 grams per day.

Most people only get about 10-15 grams of fiber per day. If you think you need to up your fiber intake you should concentrate on eating more whole plant foods. This means avoiding refined and processed products like canned fruit and vegetables. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, beans, legumes and whole-grain products will all contribute to a diet high in fiber. Make sure you are also drinking enough water to get the most benefits from a high fiber diet.

Why is communication important?

Communication is a major part of human interaction. We communicate in a variety of ways, some more obvious than others. Speaking, writing, even text messaging are all various ways in which most of us communicate every day. But language is not the only means of communication. Body language and facial expressions are also ways in which we communicate. Let’s take a look at some of the answers for the question why is communication important.

building relationships

In order to build and maintain good relationships with others, it is important to be an effective communicator. It’s hard to get to know someone better if they are unable to open up. why is communication important? Most children learn from an early age the importance of speaking with and listening to others. This carries on throughout life as we develop different kinds of relationships in life. Friendships, work colleagues, team members, love relationships – they all require communication for needs and wants to be understood and ultimately fulfilled.

developing trust

The more you get to know a person over time the better able you are to understand how trustworthy they are. Being able to share confidences, especially with a friend or lover, builds trust. It takes effective communication to be able to do this. When communication in a relationship breaks down the relationship begins to suffer.

colloboration

Communication is needed for good collaboration. This is true in a variety of circumstances including in the work place and on sports teams. Individuals need to be able to express their thoughts and needs clearly  to be understood. communication importantIndeed, communication is bidirectional. Listening to each other is very important.

Big businesses, over the last few years, have begun to pay more attention to the ways in which communication occurs in their organizations. It has become popular for many businesses to offer workshops on effective communication across all employee levels. Innovation is an important part of any business growth and it requires strong communication.

hidden meanings

Body language and facial expressions play a big role in communication.  From childhood we have to learn hidden social cues. It is not something that is inherently part of us. Moreover, these social cues vary according to culture and place. It can be confusing if you travel to a country where you lack knowledge of social norms and cues.

These days younger generations also seem to prefer to do a lot of communication online. Speaking on the phone, among young adults, is no longer as popular as it once was.  Communicating via social media platforms and text messaging is far more prevalent.

Why is sleep important?

Getting enough quality sleep is very important to overall good physical and mental health. When you don’t get enough sleep, especially over an extended period of time, your quality of life can be severely affected. Let’s take a look at the answers to the question why is sleep important.

Understanding the sleep cycle

The human sleep cycle has two key components: REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and NREM (non-repaid eye movement) sleep. why is sleep important?

The majority of our sleep cycle is spent in NREM sleep. Up to 80% of the total sleep we get each nigh is NREM. During NREM sleep the body is working to repair itself. Energy levels are renewed. Also, important hormones that aid in growth and development are released.

REM sleep, on the other hand, is essential for our overall mental wellbeing. REM sleep makes up between 20-25% of the total hours slept each night. It is during this stage of the cycle that we dream. During REM sleep the brain is processing and organizing information from the day, building memory, stimulating growth and reducing stress levels.

When the NREM and REM cycles are negatively affected during the sleep cycle, the body and mind both suffer. Waking up frequently during the night, difficulties with breathing, snoring and insomnia can all cause interruptions to the cycle.

healthy brain functions

Sleep gives your body valuable down time in which it works to keep brain functions healthy. During sleep, the brain is working to form new pathways. The formation of these pathways contributes to a stronger memory and the ability to better learn new information. In fact, quality sleep will help you to pay better attention, strengthen your problem solving skills and even increase creativity.

Young children and teenagers especially rely on sleep to aid in growth and development. Cells, tissues and muscles are repaired during the sleep cycle. is sleep importantBut being deprived of sleep can cause real problems. If you aren’t getting enough sleep your physical health will deteriorate. You will also be affected in the form of slow reaction times, general moodiness, the inability to pay attention and experience difficulty in making decisions. Sustained sleep deficiency, such as chronic insomnia, can lead to problems with depression. Sleep deprived individuals can experience suicidal thoughts or engage in risk-taking behavior.

physical health

If you aren’t getting enough quality sleep, you are at higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. Good sleep helps to keep the heart and blood vessels functioning properly. Research shows that people who sleep six or less hours a night actually have higher levels on inflammation in their blood. This can take a negative toll on health over time.

Interestingly, sleep deficiency can lead to weight gain and even obesity. This is partly because of an imbalance of hormones. The hormones ghrelin (controls hunger) and leptin (control feelings of fullness) can become out of sync when you are not sleeping enough. The levels of ghrelin in your blood will go up, making you feel hungrier. And the the levels of leptin will go down, making it more difficult to get full.

Insulin levels are also affected by how much sleep you are getting. Insulin is the hormone that controls blood glucose (sugar). When blood sugar levels are too high, you can develop diabetes. Sustained sleep deficiency can cause higher blood glucose levels.

The immune system also needs sleep to stay in healthy working order. Not getting enough sleep can lead to problems with your body being able to fight common infections.

how much sleep do you need?

How much sleep an individual needs each night can vary. Most experts recommend getting a solid 8 hours of sleep every night. Of course, 8 hours may be too much for some people while others may need closer to 10 hours. As we age it may become more difficult to sleep for 8 hours in one go. Taking naps, like children, becomes far more common. You should pay attention to what your body is most comfortable with. If you think you have sleep deficiency it’s a good idea to see a doctor for a consultation.
